About the Gun
"Little
Helen"…sounds like the name of someone's grandmother doesn't
it? Well, it is - as well as the
name of the cannon currently in use by the recreated Coren's Independent
Artillery.
As
the gun was being built, commander Billy Myers' grandmother - Helen
"Little Helen" Hopkins - passed away, and everyone involved
in the unit felt it was appropriate to honor her legacy by naming
the cannon after her. She had a life long love of history. She was a volunteer at Fort Mifflin & Gloria Dei Church in Philadelphia.
A "two-pounder" (referring to her two-pound solid
iron shot), Little Helen has an iron tube fitted with a steel sleeve
to provide extra strength and safety. She's mounted on a galloper
carriage, originally designed to hook up to a horse and "gallop
away." This construction allows for quick and agile movements
that make Coren's one of the few crews able to keep up with the
light infantry on the field - and allows them to go "over,
under, or through" any obstacles in their way.
And
don't let "Little" fool you, Helen can really make some
big noise.
